Habitat's Vision and Mission

Habitat for Humanity International (HFHI) is a nonprofit and ecumenical organization dedicated to eliminating substandard, poverty housing throughout the world. Habitat for Humanity uplifts people by building decent, affordable housing in partnership with them. This fosters unity by connecting all of us through a shared concern that far too many people endure sleepless nights in deplorable conditions.

All people regardless of race, religion, or ethnicity are welcome to join us as we build simple, affordable houses in partnership with those in need of adequate shelter. Since 1976 Habitat for Humanity has built more than 250,000 homes, sheltering more than 1,000,000 people in more than 3,000 communities worldwide.

Now celebrating our twentieth year, Habitat for Humanity Santa Cruz County is an independent and locally operated affiliate of HFHI. In the spirit of Santa Cruz our affiliate has attracted caring individuals in the community to sit on our Board of Directors, staff our offices, and to volunteer their personal time towards building affordable housing in Santa Cruz County.

Equally important, community members also express their kindness through direct contributions, and by supporting critical fundraising events.

How the Program Works
Habitat for Humanity Santa Cruz County is not a giveaway program. Habitat homes are purchased by the homeowner families who make a down payment and pay a monthly mortgage payment. Mortgages are provided by Habitat for Humanity Santa Cruz at zero percent interest.

Families also invest hundreds of hours of their own labor. Homeowner families are chosen according to their need, their ability to repay the no-profit, zero-interest mortgage, and their willingness to work in partnership with Habitat.

Generous Giving
Together Habitat for Humanity of Santa Cruz County volunteers and families have built more than 30 homes. Moreover, Habitat has new projects in the incubation and pre-planning stages running from the City of Santa Cruz to Watsonville. However, to build new affordable homes in Santa Cruz County, Habitat must purchase suitable properties and fund build-outs up front. We can only fund these projects with the support of kind contributions from people like you.
